Water conservancy and hydropower

2026-01-22
1. Water Conservancy and Hydropower Monitoring

Hydropower dams, as large-scale hydraulic structures, involve enormous investment and produce significant effects after completion. However, due to the complexity of their structure and operating environment, coupled with insufficient experience and uncertainties in design, construction, and operation and maintenance, the disasters caused by their failures are extremely severe. Continuous real-time monitoring of the operational status of hydropower dams not only provides safety assessments and ensures their safe operation, but also accumulates valuable technical data for the design and construction of similar projects.

2. Monitoring Items and Monitoring Equipment
  • Reservoir water level monitoring (reservoir water level gauge)
  • Hydrological and meteorological monitoring (six-parameter meteorological station)
  • Surface displacement monitoring (static level, inclinometer, GNSS, robotic total station, array displacement gauge)
  • Deep horizontal displacement monitoring (array displacement gauge, fixed inclinometer)
  • Seepage monitoring (piezometer, weir gauge)
  • Tilting monitoring (inclinometer, surveying robot)
  • Crack monitoring (crack gauge)
  • Stress-strain monitoring (strain gauge)
  • Seismic response monitoring (blasting vibration meter)
3. Case Analysis
3.1 Project Overview

A small reservoir is an important component of the district's water conservancy system, undertaking important tasks such as irrigation, flood control, and drought relief. Due to its numerous locations and remote areas, small reservoirs have always been a weak link in the district's water conservancy system in terms of operation monitoring and safety assessment. Currently, there are 98 public welfare small reservoirs in the county, including 14 small (1) type reservoirs and 84 small (2) type reservoirs. This project includes 28 small reservoirs in the Jiangxia District Small Reservoir Rainfall and Water Level Monitoring and Dam Safety Monitoring Facility Construction Project (Phase I), including 4 small (1) type reservoirs and 24 small (2) type reservoirs. The monitoring implementation project includes the construction of rainfall and water level monitoring stations, video monitoring stations, and dam safety monitoring stations.

3.2 Project Components

The main components of a small reservoir's rainfall and water level monitoring and dam safety monitoring system include: reservoir water level monitoring points, rainfall monitoring points, dam seepage monitoring points, dam seepage pressure monitoring points, dam deformation monitoring points, basic reservoir verification data, video monitoring points, and data storage and transmission components.

This project primarily collects and transmits data from rainfall and water level monitoring points, dam safety monitoring stations, and video monitoring points. The main equipment includes: telemetry terminals, rainfall and water level monitoring equipment, video monitoring equipment, dam safety monitoring station equipment, a power supply system, and lightning protection grounding.
